One of the Spanish definitions of Sonora means "harmonious". Before the 1848-1849 rush to the area's gold field, there was just such a tranquil place inhabited by the Mi-Wuk Native Americans in the areas of the Tuolumne and Stanislaus Rivers, Sonora (actually Sonora Campo) was named by the fortune seekers from the state of Sonora, Mexico, among the first large group to begin scouring the golden-veined earth around Woods Creek. This tells the beginning of the town.
