Description Landscape tree Big Oak tree for which town was named Big Oak Flat, 1869 "The Big fire of 1862 killed the tree and it was shorn of its branches. In 1869, the ground on which it stood was worked over for gold it contained and the tree overturned. There it lay until 1901 in that position when it was destroyed by fire. The frame in which the picture is held, is made of a piece of the Giant Oak". Picture and information given by the donor, Jame Fisher, Big Oak Flat. Picture of the Big Oak taken in the late 60's. Fisher home in background Land on which the tree stood was at one time owned by the Fishers. A portion of the is encased in a marker on Highway 120 located on the original site.
